Thoughts on Project
I thought this project was very straightforward and easy to understand but it was more time-consuming since the germinal centers require precise tracing. Overall, it was pretty easy to identify for me but in the discussion on this project I saw that some people were having a little bit of difficulty, so I spend some of my time helping them out to. This topic is also something that I hold very close to my heart so I felt like I was making a huge impact by volunteering on this research and helping out with this. I would recommend this project to people that are patient and able to take the time to trace because sometimes its faster at about five minutes and other times it takes about ten to fifteen. I would also recommend if you have a project that you are passionate about, try and spend some time in the discussion area helping others out since that is also a way to create an impact.
The goal for this project was to help researchers decode bacterial DNA to help fight infectious diseases! Many breast cancer patients' lymph nodes have been collected by hospitals to study differences and similarities in numbers, shapes, and locations of the germinal centers in the lymph nodes. These germinal centers are specialized cells that attack something which they see as foreign. They are large dots which are stained pink as immune cells are being produced there and only show up when something is foreign. The researchers are trying to find patterns in lymph nodes that are associated with breast cancer. The results will be compared to others in zooniverse, with specialized doctors and computer programs can become more intelligent as they will be able to know to look more specifically so it doesn't need to be conducted by hand again. In the classification, volunteers will need to look for and identify the pink structures which are the germinal centers and trace around them carefully. If they are blurry or not present, they need to be sure to list that.
